Federal Skilled Trades


Federal Skilled Trades program enables skilled workers with either a valid job offer or certificate of qualification, to become Canadian permanent residents based work experience in the qualified skilled or technical trades.

To be eligible for this program, you have to meet the following minimum requirement:
  • Two years of full-time (or equivalent part-time), paid work experience in past five years before applying, in any of the following technical trades - skill level B (work experience must be after you became independently qualified to practice your trade):
    • Industrial, electrical and construction trades
    • Maintenance and equipment operation trades
    • Supervisors and technical jobs in natural resources, agriculture and related production
    • Processing, manufacturing and utilities supervisors and central control operators
    • Chefs and cooks
    • Butchers and bakers
  • Meet the job requirements for your skilled trade
  • English and/or French language ability at a minimum score of:
    • Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 4 each in: 
      • Writing
      • Reading
    • Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 5 each in:
      • Speaking
      • Listening
  • Either a valid full-time job offer for minimum of one-year or a certificate of qualification that proves you are qualified to work in your skilled trade in Canada
A certificate, diploma or degree for your secondary and/or post-secondary education is not required, but it can help to improve your score.

Once you meet the minimum requirement, you will be assessed and subsequently ranked in the Express Entry pool of candidates.

You must be admissible to Canada, and will also need to proof that you have sufficient funds for you and your family (if you have one) to settle in Canada.
